Soul Cakes have their roots deep in the ancient celebration of Samhain, the Celtic festival that marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark half of the year. These cakes were simple, often spiced with nutmeg or cinnamon, and dotted with currants or raisins. But they were more than just a tasty treat—they were tokens of remembrance. People would go “souling,” singing door-to-door in exchange for soul cakes, with each cake representing a prayer for the departed.
